With a considerably good distance from Cebu City, more or less 109 kilometers away from it, San Remegio is undisturbed from the city’s complicated lifestyles. Aside from that, the municipality enjoyed for having the longest shoreline of white sand and its beaches are known for being “naturally extraordinaire”.
The total land area is 9,546,42 hectares and is composed of twenty-seven (27) barangays. 11.48% or 1,096.30 hectares are considered urban which includes: Poblacion, Argawanon, Hagnaya (the gateway to Bantayan Island) and Punta. The remaining barangays belong to the rural category which are the: Anapog, Bagtic, Bancasan, Batad, Bus-ogon, Calambua, Canagahan, Dapdap, Gawaygaway, Kayam, Kinawahan, Lambusan, Lawis, Libaong, Looc, Luyang, Maño, Sab-a, San Miguel, Tacup, Tambongon, To-ong and Victoria.
The town’s topography is flat in most areas especially in the lowland areas, near the coastline. However, in the inland area, it is categorized as flat but undulate from hilly to mountainous. The residents are active in agriculture, fishing and livestock raising.
The climate and the soil are good for raising crops like coconut, sugar cane (sugar) and corn cane. In addition, San Remegio has a large plantation of mangoes and one of the major suppliers of Indian, pajo and commercial mangoes in Cebu.
Another income generating project is the Basket Weaving. Their baskets are known for its uniqueness and durability. Probably, it is the best handicraft of the town has to offer and is starting to penetrate the world market.
The municipality provides its own nursery for breeding of livestock such as cow, swine and goat intended for auctions, supply and other community projects.
When it comes to education and schools, San Remegio has a sufficient number of public and private elementary and secondary (high school) schools. The quality of teaching is guaranteed as noted in their academic performances especially in schools: San Remegio National High School which is located in the town proper and the Luyang National High School at Barangay Luyang, 22 kilometers away from the municipal hall.
In honor of the Queen of Spain, Isabela II, Punta was given a new name as Punta Isabel in early 1800. The town celebrates its annual fiesta on May 15-16 in veneration of their patron saints San Juan Nepomuceno and San Isidro Labrador.
However, San Remegio has a unique name because it is not derived from those two names. The name was acquired from Remigio Multon, the commander of the Spanish sentinels. He was considered a hero by organizing a system to thwart the Moro pirates’ intentions.

Because of his bravery, he was honored by adding “San” to his name for saintly disgnity. Moreover, Kanghagas was renamed into San Remigio and eventually replaced Punta Isabel as the name of the municipality.
From horrible past, San Remegio has evolved into an “Eco-Tourism Paradise” because of having the longest shoreline of powdery white sand, plus the stimulating sea breeze and the enticing crystal clear waters. Foreign and local day-trippers found it irresistible to bask under the sun or be immersed in its immaculate sea waters.
Recently, San Remegio has been taking a big leap in tourism. Fish sanctuaries are developed and new dive sites are discovered, catering to both beginners and experienced divers especially in the PADI dive shop in San Remegio Beach Club.
The long stretch of ala-Boracay beaches especially from Punta to Anapog attracts tourists. Experience the excellent accommodation of some notedresorts in town such as the Victoria Hard Rock Beach Resort and Fishing Village, Warren’s Beach Resort, Lingay Beach resort and Restaurant, Verdimar Resort and the Elegant Beach Resort. Public beaches are opened for free for the low-income families.
The marine territory is booming with different flora and fauna. Several sharks like the white tip reef sharks, bamboo sharks, whale sharks and nurse sharks are sighted occasionally. Turtles, manta rays and school of barracudas are also taking their sojourn in the place.
FESTIVALS:
San Remegio celebrates the “Lapyahan Festival” every year in cognizance with its town fiesta. The title implies “shoreline” which contributes a lot to the progress of the land due to tourism. The theme is a combination of its colorful history and how it evolved into a tourist destination because of its beautiful shoreline.
